Polymer Additives: Fillers, Reinforcement and Compatibilisers

Describing an input as an additive, filler or reinforcement depends on its function in the formulation and measured behaviour.

What does an additive do?

Polymer additives may be incorporated to adjust processing, stability, appearance or service properties. Antioxidants, UV stabilisers, pigments and processing aids have different functions.

Suitability depends on the main polymer, other ingredients, process and final service conditions. An input that is useful in one application may not give the same result in another.

Filler versus reinforcement

Fillers may alter formulation volume, cost structure, density or physical properties. Reinforcement is assessed with the aim of improving load transfer and mechanical behaviour. The same input can serve multiple roles in different formulations.

The presence of a fibrous input alone does not prove reinforcement. Fibre dimensions, distribution, orientation and matrix interaction matter. Stiffness may increase while elongation or impact behaviour declines; outcomes need to be measured together.

What issue does a compatibiliser address?

Insufficient interaction between components can lead to dispersion and load-transfer problems. Compatibilisers are evaluated to modify that interaction in a selected system.

Suitable chemistry and loading for PP and fibrous inputs depend on the matrix and feedstock. No single compatibiliser is a universal solution for every fibre. Selection should use controlled formulation comparisons.

Loading, total part cost and validation

Increasing additive loading does not improve every property. Feeding, flow, moisture, wear, surface quality and process stability can also change. Weight and volume fractions should be explicitly identified and comparisons made on the same basis.

Reduced virgin PP consumption alone does not mean lower total cost. Drying, cycle time, scrap and logistics must be assessed together. BIO-LIF loading and results are determined from the customer formulation, PP grade and target-part acceptance criteria.
